Bectu’s Mentoring Programme
“The mentoring scheme helped me set my goals and it was helpful to speak to the mentors and ask for their advice when needed. I have learnt set etiquette, makeup truck etiquette, when it is appropriate to speak up and when it isn’t. Your dreams are achievable! If I can make it into the industry, you can too. I love the scheme! I have recommended this to all my colleagues and am aware that 2 are on the next mentoring scheme already.” - Mentee
“I have loved the mentor/mentee sessions. I think it’s a great way to upskill. I’ve asked those I have met to come and do dailies on my current project. I hope to be involved in the future.” - Mentor

As part of its CPD support, the union provides a mentoring program. In operation since 2012, the peer to peer, branch lead schemes each have objectives of recruiting and developing talent.
Our Hair, Makeup and Prosthetics scheme approach is tailored and includes:

-
Developing scheme structure
-
Recruitment of mentors and mentees, plus training
-
Pairing mentors/mentees or facilitating groups
-
Plus a range of either 1-2-1/group mentoring, workshops and networking events
Being a mentor enables you to get involved in professional development of others, give back plus also develop your own skills and networking opportunities. Being a mentee means you can collaborate with your mentor to grow your skills, make better decisions, and gain new perspectives on your life and career. Our 2023 scheme included over 10 mentors and 20 mentees. The mentees have received support and guidance, enabling them to build confidence and knowledge to find junior roles in the industry. We encourage our mentors to offer the mentees work or experience on set when opportunities arise. We are proud to have created a strong network of mentors and mentees over the last few years, establishing a strong sense of community within this branch.
